7 Things Happy People Do – They Love to Learn (Part 2 of 7)

We seldom connect the word “learning” with “happiness”.

Yet learning is a fundamental key to being happy.

For me, learning is like breathing, I live to do it!

If by chance you equate learning with boring then you’ve probably never sought to learn about that which interests you.

As children we were forced into learning what others decided for us. School was not my favourite place.

Not so now.
Now we are free.
Learning ought to be wild, exciting, fun, and take you into new adventures.
Make it so.

Read on to learn (!) how.

“The greater our knowledge increases the more our ignorance unfolds.”

John F. Kennedy

This is part 2 of a 7-part series: Things Happy People Do.

Key #1 is Happy People Have an Open Mind. Let’s get started on #2!

Key #2:

Happy People Love to Learn

Learning leads to wisdom. One answer can open up a thousand more questions.

It intrigued me when I first realized that learning makes me happy. I was already doing a lot of learning and it’s all so obvious now, but I simply hadn’t crystallized it. But what a great way to intentionally exercise your power to change your life and instantly move into greater happiness… Just Like That!

Learning becomes a thrill once you understand the idea. Life is boring when you don’t add to your knowledge.

Definition of a boring life? A life that stays the same with the same old ideas. Just writing that is enough for me.

  • Knowledge encourages you to further open your mind; to embrace radical new concepts.
  • Your open mind draws you into further knowledge; into new adventures called LIFE.

Never stop learning. If you want to have fun.

At some point the knowledge you gain will radically challenge one of your beliefs. If you embrace it, then you’ve officially cast off and are sailing your own chosen course.

A great example is the extraordinary cancer breakthrough coming up.

Where Do You Start?

Step 1: Start learning about how life works. Why not? It affects everything. Once you know why and how you create your life, you reach a whole new level of confidence, freedom, and can-do happiness. Read on for how to get started with that. Continue reading “7 Things Happy People Do – They Love to Learn (Part 2 of 7)”

7 Things Happy People Do – They Have An Open Mind (Part 1 of 7)

We’re talking about YOU today, as we always do : ) – because your happiness doesn’t come from others, it comes from YOU.

What do happy people do?

They’re getting what they want, so exactly what do they do?

And how can you do it too?

In order to do each key justice this was becoming an epic post, so it’s now in 7 parts. This is part 1 of the 7-part series:
Things Happy People Do. Each part focuses on one key thing happy people do, one key thing you can also easily do.

Let’s get started!

Key #1:

Happy People Have an Open Mind

Why is an open mind important? Is your mind open or closed?

A Closed Mind

A closed mind is stuck, rigid and narrow. It wants life to stay the same; it thinks it already knows enough on a subject or about life.

However, fortunately there is always more to learn. Even a small nuance can clarify your understanding and give you a breakthrough to yet another discovery. A closed mind cannot learn nor can it change. It stagnates.

An Open Mind

By contrast an open mind means you give yourself permission to go with the flow of life and to engage in new adventures.

You welcome new information.

Unique solutions suddenly become obvious.

You’re willing to try radical or controversial concepts which open you to a new world, such as putting yourself first (key #3). New ways of thinking are what makes life interesting and exciting.

Life is always evolving, as is nature.

“What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such.”

Henry Miller (American Writer and Painter 1891 – 1980)

How an Open Mind Has Helped Me

Take my interest in nutrition and natural therapy.

At around age 20 I discovered that one of the biggest killers of Australians is bowel cancer.

I intuitively knew this was ridiculous, that the body is capable of radiant health.

I figured there was something wrong with our eating.

Health was important to me so I spent years investigating and moved from Fit for Life, to the Zone diet, to Eat Right for Your (Blood) Type. Each one educated me about eating and the body’s biology. Very often they challenged or totally overhauled my beliefs.

It would have been silly to lock onto conclusions about anything; there was more to learn – there always is.

My wisdom continues to develop and it increases exponentially.

Nowadays I’ve moved onto far greater thinking; those of you who have read my book would know this.

Being open empowers me, it gives me confidence; instead of being scared of new  information it moves me into a happier, more carefree place. I

expect and embrace new ways of thinking; they’ve become a natural part of my life.

Soytainly Not

Case in point, I used to think soy milk was a great alternative to cow’s milk.

Now I never touch the stuff.

It’s less about being wrong but rather our willingness to build a greater viewpoint, a knowledge base.

If you’re wondering why the change of heart, I suggest you research and form your own conclusions. There is already plenty of information about soy out there.

My role is not to tell you how to eat but to help you open your mind to all potentials.

How You Can Win a Copy of the book “Just Like That!”?

(Update: this competition is now over)

“Just Like That!” was recently reviewed on Couponer101.

The folks at www.couponer101.com don’t even usually like self-help books, but they said this after reading “Just Like That!”

I’ll have to admit, I’m not a big fan of self help books.  I’ve read quite a few and unfortunately, gleaned very little information from them that truly helped me.

Believe it or not, I’ve now found one that I really enjoyed AND is very helpful at the same time.

We have all probably heard the phrase, “You have to love yourself before anyone else can love you” – and usually I would say in return, “blah, blah, blah”.  Not so with this book. The author does a fantastic job of helping you discover who you really are and what your weaknesses are. By discovering these things about yourself, you really can start to understand more about your motivations and how what you project, has everything to do with how you are perceived by others….”

I’d love you to have the same thrill as I’m having.

Say “Yes” to life and go for it.

Has Your Pursuit of the Material Been at the Expense of Happiness?

It’s hard to imagine being happy with less ‘stuff’. But that’s exactly what Kevin McCloud so elegantly demonstrates in his very entertaining DVD ‘Slumming It’.

Happy in a Slum?

The people of Dharavi are happy. What does this mean for those of us who don’t live in slums and yet still struggle to find happiness? Does the beautiful home you’re striving for in suburbia bring you more happiness than those living in a slum?

“I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love.”

            John Lennon

Why Watching ‘Slumming It’ Will Help You Be Happy

For us in watching this DVD we’re without the sense of smell, but Kevin McCloud so very cleverly sticks our nose into everything else. ‘Slumming It’ gives you in-the-face perspective; it reminds you of what really matters in life. You’ll get an immediate lift and most likely see your life with new eyes.

Several people I’ve spoken to have said it was one of the best shows they’ve ever seen.

We were about to re-paint our bathroom when we watched ‘Slumming It’ and afterward my husband said, ‘Well, that’s it… we no longer need to paint the bathroom’. And that’s exactly it, although we still painted, we lost the urgency and got the message loud and clear yet again that this type of thing really doesn’t matter.

‘Slumming It’ shows you what does matter. And it’s not a glossy bathroom.

Why is the Slum Dharavi So Unique?

Kevin McCloud takes the cameraman (sometimes too easy to forget there’s a talented cameraman alongside him!) into all avenues of Dharavi, a slum that sits on only one square mile (1.3 kms) of valuable land in Mumbai.

Incredibly, 1 million people live there.

Often it’s 20 people to a tiny 4-roomed house; beds are made up each night in living spaces. Imagine sleeping in your kitchen tonight with 5 others. My quick calculation means that’s about 200 people living with you on your average house block (surrounded by a million others).

Along with that there’s no sanitation or running water; I do agree these are serious issues which cause illness in Dharavi. There are a astonishing 500 people to 1 toilet. Each toilet juts out over a river which serves as the plumbing.

Why Are the People of Dharavi Happy?

The good news. In Dharavi along with happiness there’s no crime. Repeat: No Crime. 85% of the people are employed. Dharavi has a thriving community. As Kevin McCloud says, there is no danger of an elderly person dying alone in their apartment and being found 3 months later. In Sydney last year shockingly an elderly woman was found 8 years later. In Dharavi, the elderly are included in everyday life; everyone is useful. They work together as a team and support each other.

One of my observations was that when women have babies, they have support 24×7 from umpteen experienced women. The village we’ve lost. I’ll bet their level of post-natal depression is negligible and the women probably don’t even use the term.

Why Do We Want More Stuff?

If we really dig down, the reason we want stuff is to appear successful to others. As if appearing successful makes us happy. It doesn’t. Deep down however, we think it does. We believe if we have enough stuff (to show off) we’ll eventually score happiness. Wrong again. There’s no happy ending to collecting stuff.

Consider this: if you were the only person on Earth and already had what you needed, would you want more possessions?

“It is preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly.”

Henry David Thoreau

And What… NO Spoilt Brats?

The children of Dharavi are happy, teenagers don’t have a desperate need for privacy, they’re not grumpy, they’re relaxed and interact freely with adults, the kids have no useless gadgets to entertain and rob them of patience and creativity (my kids no longer have those gadgets and they’re happy again. Phew. A story in itself.)

If you’re interested in finding happiness, discuss Dharavi next time you’re with friends. If you’re out walking or sitting quietly, I suggest contemplating the strong points of such a life. You’ll be amazed at your realizations.

Transform your life: lose your obsession with possessions.

2 Tips to Satisfy & Give You a Happy Life

I realize your life is likely different to that of Dharavi, that you probably already have what you need. If so, move on from possessions and get long-lasting happiness by doing these two things: Continue reading “Has Your Pursuit of the Material Been at the Expense of Happiness?”

Finding Times Tough? Do You Destroy What You Want When it Arrives? (Part 7 of 7)

Sunset Dec 2011This story is surprisingly common.

The day arrives and you get what you want.

Do you celebrate and accept it?

Or are you suspicious of it, do you shake your head in disbelief?

Most people question and doubt the outcome!

If you are someone who doubts, then catch yourself, stop it and just accept the good fortune that YOU created.

“Circumstances – what circumstances? I make circumstances.”

~~ Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821)

This is Part 7 of a 7-Part Series “Are You Finding Times Tough?”

In parts 1 – 6, you learned

  • how to take charge of your life
  • the benefits of taking responsibility for your life
  • how to turn your life around
  • how to take action
  • an easy way to start letting go of your old life
  • how to act as if you already have the life you want

…to move yourself into a new exciting and happy life.

Don’t Question It – It’s Yours

Sometimes what we want arrives quite suddenly as if from nowhere, and it surprises us. Out of the blue we go from not having, to having. Perhaps it’s the suddenness that causes suspicion and bewilderment. We find ourselves saying things like, ‘Now that’s weird, how can this be happening?’

My advice is: When you get what you want, be very aware of your reaction. Don’t say, ‘I don’t believe it’ or ‘Okay yeah, but what about all my other problems’.

We do this even in everyday situations such as hearing nothing after a job interview but after calling the organization discover the job is yours. A few things don’t add up and you’re tempted to find fault with the process or become suspicious about what took place. Don’t, just allow it. Be thankful.

Instead you can ‘blame’ the following – i.e. that you:

– had a can-do attitude
(see part 1 How to Take Charge Today and Get a Happy Life)
– took responsibility for your life
(see part 2 Can You Make This Simple Choice to Get the Happy Life You Want?)
– decided what you wanted
(see part 3 2 Easy and Effective Steps to Start Your Happy Life)
– took action
(see part 4 Take Action Today to Get Your Happy Life)
– let go of the old to allow the new
(see part 5 Make This Easy Change Today to Get Your Happy Life)
– acted ‘as if’ or pretended you already had what you want
(see part 6 Rebuild Confidence in Yourself Today to Get What You Want)

It’s true – these changed your reality and you moved into a circumstance where you can truly do and have what you want.

If You Question What You’ve Received, it May Disappear

When you question, it means Continue reading “Finding Times Tough? Do You Destroy What You Want When it Arrives? (Part 7 of 7)”
