The 6 Hazards of Waiting for a Different Future

We’re often told to stay away from the past.

But did you know that it’s also futile to brood constantly about the future?

Anything other than ‘in the moment’, ‘in the NOW’, is unproductive.

“With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882, American lecturer and poet. Champion of individualism.)

How do You Know if You Are Living in the Past?

6 Reasons Why Living in the Future Can’t Get You What You Want

  1. You can only be effective in creating and influencing your future while being in the moment. If you’re living in your future, life is as unfulfilling as if you were in the past. If your mind is in the future you’re wishing and hoping for something from today, but you aren’t consciously and intentionally creating it now. To create what you want you must be in the moment, in the ‘now’.
  2. You’re missing the fun of today. If you’re constantly planning ahead, you’re missing out on the happiness you could be having today.
  3. If you put off doing what you want for the future, that is where it will stay. Get creative today about doing what you want today – every day. Then you’ll have your future happening today.
  4. If you’ll only be happy in the future, then happiness stays in the future i.e. if you’ll only be happy once you have your new home, a holiday, a car, clothes etc, then your happiness won’t ever be right now. It’s not good enough to be momentarily happy on big occasions. Take steps to make every day special – it’s yours if you want it. For more ideas on how to do that read Discover the First Key Element to Getting What You Want.
  5. You create anxiety by living in the future. Obsessing about the future can create fear about what might happen. Anxiety prevents you from moving into the most ideal and satisfying day because you get what you think i.e. more anxiety. Continue reading “The 6 Hazards of Waiting for a Different Future”

How do You Know if You are Living in the Past?

If you live in the past, you don’t get what you want.

When you are consciously present in the moment you get what you want.

So, if you want to leave behind living in the past… read on to discover how.

To help you get what you want, this is Part 3 of a 4-Part series – Why Being in the Moment Gets You What You Want.

In Parts 1 and 2 you learned the 10 Magic Reasons Living in the Moment Gets You What You Want and The 5 Hazards of Obsessing About the Past.

Question: How do you know if you are living in the moment, in ‘the now’?

Answer: If you are aware of your thoughts and emotions, then you are present and in the moment.

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”

Anaïs Nin (1903 – 1977, French-Cuban author)

Listed below are 27 everyday situations, clues to help you recognize when you are living in the past. Along with each clue is what you’d do if you were instead ‘being present’.

By the way, you’ll notice that living in the past is largely driven by unhelpful emotion whereas emotion disappears in the present… you are calm.

27 Everyday Clues: You are Living in the Past When:

  1. You react to circumstances without thinking; you impulsively judge a situation as good or bad. For example, you receive an email and instantly judge the contents as one way or the other. Being present: You acknowledge that you don’t yet fully understand the bigger picture – you allow whatever it is to be part of a greater outcome for you.
  2. You judge differences as good or bad. You may have a preference and go for what you want, but if something is not ideal or good for you, it isn’t therefore ‘bad’. Being present: You allow situations or options to just ‘be’ neither. You have no reaction.
  3. You speak without thinking, without awareness. Do you ever say, ‘I am sick of…’, ‘I’d die for a…’? Being present: You’re aware of what you’re saying – you say only that which you truly want.
  4. You expect something bad to happen, ‘because it always does’. Being present: You know that you create only the best for you – getting what you want becomes a habit, a healthy habit.
  5. You don’t want to change i.e. you avoid new ideas, you won’t accept responsibility for your circumstances, you refuse to see yourself in others, you want life to stay the same, you want people to feel sorry for you. Being present: You’re flexible, willing to learn and invite change – you see change as an opportunity for adventure and greater happiness. 6. You can’t let go of controlling a circumstance and its outcome. Being present: You create what you want and allow it to unfold in the most ideal way, uniquely for you.
  7. You can’t accept someone for who they are. Do you constantly try to change people e.g. your partner, child, friend? Being present: You allow others to be who they are and instead look only to changing yourself to satisfy the lack you notice in them. By doing this you give others the gift of acceptance and yourself an opportunity to grow. How to do this is in my book “How to Get Anything You Want – Just Like That!”
  8. You control others, their life. Being present: You’re at peace with how others choose to live their lives and how they choose to behave. You receive the same gift from others.
  9. You can’t let someone go e.g. a friendship, partner. Being present: You calmly know that as one person leaves your life you’re inviting someone else in – someone more suited to who you have become and who will help you grow in different ways. 10 Quick Ways to Manage Your Time and Achieve More

SailingTime is an illusion, you’ve heard that before and it’s true. How would you like to walk in the door tonight beaming from ear to ear? Triumphant, happy, calm, no stress. How you manage your time can make you feel either:

  • free and inspired to do and get what you want

or

  • trapped, overwhelmed and frustrated i.e. not get what you want

10 Quick Ways to Manage Your Time

  1. Do first those tasks that seem hard for you. They’re the ones that are boring or fill you with dread. They may not be vital, but require attention and once they’re off the list a sense of peace and relief washes over you. They may even be quick to do, but for whatever reason they challenge you. Take control and do them, cross them off the list and enjoy your new sense of freedom.
  2. Do first that which truly moves you forward. The more you focus on tasks that truly move you forward, the more time it’ll seem you’ve had. Wisely use your moments of the day.
  3. Be completely present with each task i.e. Be aware of rushing the task, creating distractions, wishing the task over or that it is time to eat/drink/party. Be passionate about everything you do. When immersed in the now you go beyond time and the task is completed in ‘no time’. Aid your passion by doing work you love.
  4. Last thing before leaving your workstation in the evening, while the day is fresh in your mind, write a few notes about the following:
    • What you were doing when you stopped work today
    • What stage you were up to and where you will start from
    • Other tasks you need to do tomorrow

In the morning, merely look at your list and hit the ground running. You’ll be more effective and enjoy greater awareness straight off. Continue reading “10 Quick Ways to Manage Your Time and Achieve More”

Why You Are Never Selfish

Taverna AvliThe reason the word ‘selfish’ exists: most people are not doing what they want to do.

You’re entitled to live the life you were born to live, and so is everyone else.

Why shouldn’t you be happy?

Everyone is entitled to happiness.

If only it were that simple. With billions of people mindlessly following ‘the rules’ of society, it’s a big ask.

Well, we’ll make it simple; we’ll just change the rules.

Yep, the good news is that it’s logical.

You have 2 choices:

1. Start now doing what you want to do

2. Spend your whole life waiting for the right time (which never comes)

It’s said that on their deathbed, most people regret they didn’t do more of what they wanted to do. That’s hardly surprising.

“Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live; it is asking others to live as one wishes to live”

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

Humanity is Stagnating

Fortunately for you, today, you have now discovered a choice. But for the rest of humanity, who are effectively asleep following the rules thinking they have to, this is a sham. We should feel free to do whatever we’re drawn to. Feeling that we’ve got to do what others want is suffocating us and we’re stagnating hoping something better comes along.
